Nature’s benefits are bountiful. Physically, emotionally, socially - spending time outdoors is good for us. But for most, that’s easier said than done in winter. Those colder, grey, snowy months can be an obstacle for families to get outdoors as much as during the warmer seasons. They certainly have been obstacles for us.
So, here are some ideas for getting outside in winter - tested by families who want to play outdoor in all kinds of weather. Hope they help!
01. Let’s Do This
Mindset is everything. When we psych ourselves up and hope to enjoy the outdoors, good things come out of it. Once in nature, your disposition is likely to cheer up no matter what - that’s one of its many benefits - so let’s do this, make it part of your rhythm, push yourself to get out there. Find whatever motivates you and step outside. Good things are coming.
02. Every Little Bit Counts
If you’re not a fan of winter but want to benefit from being outdoors, you’re in luck. Turns out, nature’s benefits start to kick in after even just a few minutes of being out there. Feel free to set your expectations to match. So you just spent a half hour bundling up your kids for only fifteen minutes of play? It’s okay (possibly annoying, but okay!).Your bodies still got good circulation and activity and vitamins. Your psyche started to destress. Roll with it, as long as it lasts. A little bit goes a long way.
03. Gear Up
One of our favorite things for winter is the gear in our closets. Quality and effective gear choices will give you one of your best shots of actually enjoying the outdoors when the weather is unfavorable. Not sure where to start? 04. Get Creative
Nature rarely needs any sprucing up. It can be a playground all on its own - constantly changing and filled with things for children to exercise their own creativity. But sometimes kids need to mix up their play. Depending on your child’s age and the length of your winter, you may find yourself needing to get creative about what ideas you incorporate into your outdoor play. Mix it up with art supplies, building supplies, toys and adventures. You can make it a closed or open-ended opportunity. Just try to tie it into your children’s interests for the best impact.
05. Make it a Party
Invite friends over for a winter playdate or party. Take one of those creative ideas you were planning for your own family and ask friends to join in on the fun or make it a celebration all on its own. It may only last a little longer than usual, but new faces and new ideas can mix up the experience enough to make it that much more enticing. Chat with fellow parents about ideas for playing outdoors together. It can be easy to expect parents might rather stay in, but invite them to go outside and see what happens.
